Description
Since 1941, the American Tree Farm System® (ATFS) has educated, and recognized the commitment, of US family forest owners to protect wildlife habitat and watersheds, to conserve soil, and to provide recreation for their communities while producing wood. Appropriate primarily for small landowners, the ATFS Standards of Sustainability require that landowners develop a management plan based on strict environmental standards and implement the plan in a manner to protect the future productivity of the forest. Inspecting foresters provide the on-the-ground assurance that is essential for the integrity of the program by assuring that the standards are being met and recommending certification as appropriate. Description
Join us for a fun and educational day in the Texas Hill Country.  First, we’ll enjoy a picnic-style breakfast in Zilker Metropolitan Park, considered "Austin's most-loved park.”  We’ll then make our way to Los Madrones, a private family-owned ranch in western Travis County.  The 400-acre property features limestone bluffs, Little Bee Creek, open pastures and hilltop vistas stretching beyond the Colorado River. Ranch owners Julie and Mike Murphy converted the property to wildlife conservation in 2000, and have managed it since then to improve habitat for turkey, quail and other species.  Attendees will learn about the ranch’s history, the protection of endangered species, and prescribed burns that have taken place on the property. After working up an appetite on the ranch, we’ll head to Salt Lick BBQ where we’ll experience world-renowned barbecue with a side of Texas Hill Country hospitality.  The Roberts family recipes used at Salt Lick have roots back to the wagon trains in the mid-1800’s. We’ll wrap up our day at the famous Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  The Center is dedicated to inspiring the conservation of native plants. As the Botanic Garden of Texas, the Center displays native plants from across the state in its gardens and arboretum and serves as a model for creating beautiful, sustainable landscapes.  The 284-acre site features nearly 900 species of Texas native plants including the 16-acre Texas Arboretum displaying more than 70 species of native Texas trees and 76 acres of plots dedicated to long-term research on prescribed fire and land management.   Includes a light breakfast, lunch, and transportation from/to the Hyatt Regency Austin.

We’ll be joined and entertained by country music maverick Dale Watson, a true Austin-based honky-tonker carrying on in the tradition of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson with his “Ameripolitan” brand of American roots music.  You won’t want to miss this fun-filled night!

Miss out on visiting San Antonio during ACF’s 2002 National Conference?  Don’t worry, you can experience the best of two cities by hanging around an extra day this year!  Join fellow foresters and their guests for a fast-paced “bucket list” tour providing a great snapshot of San Antonio.  Just an hour and a half southwest of Austin, San Antonio is a melting pot of Mexican, German and Texan cultures.   This tour is jam-packed with facts, history and trivia as you’re taken off the beaten path to explore the sites San Antonians hold dear. After you’ve seen the Alamo and are given time to explore and grab lunch on the Riverwalk, your guides will take you through 300 years of history starting with a guided tour of the “Queen of the Missions,” Mission San Jose, then through some of the most elegant neighborhoods in the city. By the time you’re done with this tour, you’ll be able to say you experienced San Antonio as a true local – the history, people, music, culture, food.  You don’t want to miss this intimate, offbeat, and fun experience!
